Biografia Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole - Pittore (Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, 1801 - Catskill, New York, 1848). Recatosi negli Stati Uniti a 19 anni, si dedicò in particolare alla pittura di paesaggio, affiancando a modelli classicheggianti un approccio diretto con la natura; arricchì poi la sua formazione con un viaggio in Europa (1829-32). Tra i maggiori esponenti della "Hudson River School", dipinse anche opere di soggetto biblico (Cacciata dall'Eden, 1827-28, Boston, Museum of Fine Arts) e di carattere allegorico: serie del Corso dell'impero (1836, New York, Historical Society) e del Viaggio della vita (1839-40, Utica, N. Y., Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute), nelle quali tuttavia il paesaggio, in forme dal drammatico all'idilliaco, rimane il protagonista.
