Grande attore di cinema e teatro per una carriera di successo lunga oltre quarant?anni, Richard Harris è nato a Limerick, in Irlanda, l?1 ottobre del 1930. Cresciuto in una fattoria, da ragazzo Harris è una eccellente giocatore di rugby, oltre a coltivare fuori dal campo la passione per la letteratura. A causa di un principio di tubercolosi è costretto ad abbandonare il rugby e ripiega così sull?altro hobby della sua vita. Trasferitosi in Inghilterra per frequentare la London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, inizia una buona carriera teatrale, affiancata poi da quella televisiva dove debutta nel 1957 nella serie ?The Iron harp?. Poi il cinema nel 1958 dove esordisce con il film Alive and kicking di Cyril Frankel.
Dopo le parti secondarie nei film I cannoni di Navarone (1961) e Gli ammutinati del Bounty Harris interpreta un giocatore di rugby in Io sono un campione di Lindsay Anderson. Il ruolo, a lui molto familiare, gli permette di vincere la Palma d?oro a Cannes quale migliore attore e, grazie alla nomination all?oscar, di vedersi aprire le porte d Hollywood.
Tra gli attori britannici più popolari della sua generazione, Harris avvia una carriera ricca ed eclettica, trovandosi tranquillamente a suo agio nei ruoli drammatici (Deserto rosso di Antonioni nel 1964), nei film storici (Camelot di Joshua Logan, col quale vince il Golden Globe, e Cromwell), nei western (leggendario il suo ruolo nel film Un uomo chiamato cavallo) o ancora nel cinema catastrofico (Cassandra Crossing, di George Pan Cosmatos).
Dopo un?incursione dietro alla macchina da presa con il film Bloomfield, negli anni ?80 Harris privilegia il teatro. Torna poi al cinema con una serie di ruoli memorabili, anche se non più da protagonista assoluto della pellicola. Da non dimenticare la parte di cow-boy sulla via del tramonto nel film pluripremiato di Clint Eastwood Gli spietati, il suo Marco Aurelio in Il gladiatore e infine il ruolo di Albus Silente nei primi tre episodi al cinema delle avventure di ?Harry Potter?. Richard Harris è morto a Londra il 25 ottobre del 2002 proprio durante la lavorazione del terzo film del maghetto, Harry Potter e il prigioniero di Azkaban.
