Nato a Knightsbridge,London nel 1912, figlio di proprietari terrieri australiani, visse a lungo in Inghilterra dove ha compiuto gli studi universitari.
E' poi tornato in Australia. Nel 1973 ha avuto il nobel. Esordì con il romanzo Valle felice (Happy valley, 1939) storia di un cow-boy australiano. Una importante svolta nella sua attività letteraria è segnata da La storia della zia (The aunt's sto ry, 1948) in cui la frammentazione della struttura narrativa cor risponde alla incapacità del protagonista di conciliare illusione e realtà. Nei romanzi successivi al ritorno in patria è esplicito il tentativo di «popolare il grande vuoto australiano» creando una nuova mitologia della ricerca del senso dell'esistenza. Apparten gono a questo periodo L'albero dell'uomo (The tree of man, 1955), Voss (1957) che narra di un esploratore tedesco che percorre il continente australiano guidato dagli aborigeni. Il viaggio è me tafora di un itinerario di purificazione. Una nuova fase della produzione di White è segnata dall'invenzione dell'immaginario sobborgo di Sydney, Sarsaparilla, dove è ambientato Passeggeri nel carro (Riders in the charriot, 1961) storia di guerra e di persecuzione razziale. E che ricompare nei lavori teatrali dello stesso periodo: La stagione a Sarsaparilla (The season at Sarsaparilla, 1962). White è poi tornato ai romanzi di vigorosa e complessa concezione con Il mandala solido (The solid Mandala, 1966) intricata vicenda di due gemelli. E soprattutto con Il vivisezionatore (The vivisector, 1970) storia di un artista e riflessione sulla natura dell'arte. Cui seguì L'occhio dell'uragano (The eye of the storm, 1973). Più piano e accessibile è Una frangia di foglie (A fringe of leaves, 1976) storia di una donna bianca che va a vivere tra gli aborigeni munita solo di una frangia di foglie. Nel 1978 ha pubblicato la sua autobiografia, Ombre sullo specchio : un autoritratto (Flaws in the glass: a self-portrait, 1981).
Patrick White è morto il 30 settembre 1990 a Sydney dopo una lunga malattia.
