Nato a Belfast (Ulster - Irlanda del Nord) il 07 aprile 1928 fu uno scrittore di fantascienza, piuttosto noto negli anni sessanta del secolo scorso. La sua aspirazione giovanile era di studiare medicina, ma le modeste risorse finanziarie della sua famiglia glielo impedirono. I suoi racconti e romanzi riprendono questa sua insoddisfatta aspirazione all’approccio scientifico e le sue storie sono molto accurate e lo fanno considerare come uno dei maestri della “hard science fiction”. Non riuscì a diventare scrittore professionista a tempo pieno, e seppur avesse ricevuto riconoscimenti dell’establishment (nel 1980 tenne a Belfast un corso di letteratura presso la “Workers Educational Association”, e per molti anni fu membro del Consiglio della British Science Fiction Association e della Irish Science Fiction Association), nella sua biografia anglosassone si riporta che continuava a scrivere solo nel tempo libero e di sera. Continuò a scrivere anche dopo il suo pensionamento nel 1984, dovuto a forti problemi di vista causati dal diabete di cui era affetto. In Irlanda la memoria di James White è mantenuta vita tramite il James White Award Science Fiction Short Story Competition riservato a scrittori di short stories, non professionisti, di lingua inglese, con temi rigorosamente di fantascienza. Le sue opere più conosciute sono comprese nella serie di racconti intitolata ‘Sector General’, che consiste di dodici volumi principali pubblicati tra il 1962 ed il 1999; altri racconti della stessa tematica furono pubblicati fuori raccolta. Morì per un ictus il 23 agosto del 1999.
