Henry Spencer Moore nasce a Castleford nello Yorkshire il 30 luglio 1898. Nonostante il desiderio di diventare uno scultore, inizia la sua carriera come insegnante. Dopo il servizio militare svolto durante la prima guerra mondiale, frequenta la Leeds School of Art grazie a una borsa di studio per ex-militari. Nel 1921 vince una seconda borsa di studio per frequentare i corsi di scultura alla Royal College of Art di Londra, dove nel 1924 diventa insegnante di scultura, mantenendo l’incarico per sette anni. Si interessa alla scultura messicana, egizia e africana che ha modo di vedere al British Museum e nel 1925 ottiene una borsa di studio della Royal College che gli permette di visitare l'Italia. La prima personale delle sue sculture si tiene nel 1928 alla Warren Gallery di Londra.
Negli anni '30 è membro di Unit One, un gruppo di artisti d’avanguardia organizzato da Paul Nash; diventa inoltre intimo amico di Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth e del critico Herbert Read. Dal 1932 al 1939 insegna alla Chelsea School of Art. l'artista ha una forte influenza sul movimento surrealista inglese anche se non è del tutto legato ai suoi principi. Nel 1940 è nominato "artista di guerra" e riceve l'incarico dal War Artists Advisory Committee (Comitato degli artisti di guerra) di eseguire disegni raffiguranti scene di vita nei rifugi antiaerei. Dal 1940 al 1943 si dedica quasi esclusivamente al disegno. Nel 1941 si tiene la sua prima retrospettiva al Temple Newsam a Leeds. Nel 1943 riceve l'incarico di scolpire una Madonna e bambino per la Church of St. Matthew a Northampton, che costituisce la prima di una importante serie di gruppi scultorei. Nel 1946 il Museum of Modern Art di New York allestisce la sua prima importante retrospettiva all'estero. Due anni dopo vince il Premio Internazionale di Scultura alla Biennale di Venezia.
Negli anni '50 esegue alcune importanti commissioni pubbliche fra le quali Figura sdraiata (1956–58) per il palazzo dell'UNESCO a Parigi. Nel 1963 gli viene conferito il British Order of Merit. Nel 1978 l’Arts Council of Great Britain organizza una mostra sulla sua opera alla Serpentine di Londra; in questa occasione l’artista dona molte delle sue sculture alla Tate Gallery di Londra. Moore muore il 31 agosto 1986 a Perry Green, Much Hadham, nella contea dello Hertfordshire.
