Chris Johns inizia la sua carriera alla Oregon State University dove si laurea in giornalismo. Nel 1975 viene assunto come fotografo al Topeka Capital-Journal e nel 1979 è nominato National Newspaper Photographer of the Year. Nel 1980 diventa photoeditor e fotografo per i progetti speciali del Seattle Times e tre anni più tardi collaborerà come freelance con varie riviste su temi riguardanti principalmente l’Africa. Ha cominciato a collaborare con Geographic nel 1985, ed è stato assunto dalla rivista come fotografo interno nel 1995.
I reportage commissionati da National Geographic hanno condotto Chris Johns negli angoli più sperduti del globo. Dal 2005 questo versatile fotografo - a suo agio nel fotografare persone, natura e paesaggi come nel raccontare i complessi problemi relativi all’ambiente - è il direttore di National Geographic magazine.
