Biografia John Wesley

Il fondatore del metodismo John Benjamin (ma egli non usò mai il suo secondo nome) Wesley nacque il 28 giugno 1703 a Epworth, nella contea inglese del Lincolnshire, quindicesimo figlio del rettore di Epworth, il reverendo Samuel Wesley (1662-1735), e di Susannah Annesley (1669-1742). Inizialmente l'educazione del giovane John fu affidata alla madre, ma, all'età di 10 anni, egli fu ammesso alla Charterhouse School di Londra: qui rimase fino al 1720, anno in cui entrò al Church College all'università di Oxford, dove si laureò nel 1727 in arti liberali. Nel frattempo W. era stato ordinato diacono nel 1725 e divenne fellow (membro) del Lincoln College, sempre ad Oxford, l'anno successivo. Dopo un periodo di due anni come curato (era stato ordinato prete anglicano nel 1728) presso la scuola del padre, W. ritornò ad Oxford nel 1729.
