John Donne (Londra, 1572 – 31 marzo 1631) è stato un poeta inglese. Fu anche un religioso e, come tale, ricoprì il ruolo di decano della cattedrale londinese di St.Paul.
Scrisse sermoni e poemi di carattere religioso, traduzioni latine, epigrammi, elegie, canzoni e sonetti. Celeberrimi sono i suoi versi di Nessun uomo è un'isola contenuti in Meditation XVII e citati da Ernest Hemingway in Per chi suona la campana e da Nick Hornby in Un ragazzo (About a Boy).
Attento ai mutamenti della sua epoca - diviso tra la scienza di Copernico e Keplero e la filosofia di Bacone e Calvino - fu il primo a citare Galileo in un proprio componimento, Ignatius his Conclave del 1611.
Cresciuto in una famiglia che professava il cattolicesimo, Donne studiò dal 1584 a Oxford e, successivamente, a Cambridge; viaggiò per l'Europa e nel 1595 accompagnò il conte di Essex nelle spedizioni inglesi a Cadice e alle isole Azzorre.
Ritornato in patria, divenne segretario del barone Ellesmere Egerton, di cui sposò clandestinamente nel 1601 la nipote Anne More; iniziò a questo punto la sua attività letteraria. Suoi primi lavori furono canzoni satiriche e sonetti, che costituiscono il corpus giovanile della sua opera e sono apprezzabili soprattutto per il loro stile realistico e sensuale.
Le nozze clandestine con Anne More non giovarono alla sua reputazione, cosa questa che influenzerà notevolmente la sua successiva produzione letteraria.
Contestualmente, si avvicinò all'anglicanesimo affrontando da un punto di vista differente dubbi e tematiche politico-sociali, ma anche scientifiche e filosofiche, del suo tempo.
Tra mille difficoltà finanziarie, sull'orlo della disperazione (e forse anche del suicidio), sebbene fosse ormai diventato un predicatore affermato (molti suoi lavori saranno raccolti nel 1624 nelle sue Devotions) e per due volte (1601 e 1614) membro del parlamento, prese i voti e fu ordinato decano della chiesa anglicana dal re Giacomo I d'Inghilterra.
Dal 1617, anno in cui morì la moglie, la sua poesia si farà sempre più cupa, privilegiando temi funerei e pessimistiche considerazioni esistenziali.
